Question 22621: We have a whole bunch of these questions and I can't figure out how to set it up to solve any help would be appreciated. How many pounds of lima beans that cost 9 cents per pound must be mixed with 2 pounds of corn that costs 6 cents per pound to make a mixture of vegetables that costs 7 cents per pound?
1. 0.5 pounds
2. 1.0 pounds
3. 1.2 pounds
4. 1.4 pounds
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Quantity information:
You start with 2 lbs corn, add x lbs beans, and end up with (2+x)lbs.mixture.
Value of corn = 6(2)= 12 cents
Value of beans = 9x cents
Value of mixture = 7(2+x)=14+7x cents
Equation:
Value of corn + Value of beans = Value of Mixture
12 + 9x = 14+7x
2x = 2
x = 1 (lbs. of lima beans)

Stan H.
