Let the acres in the Smyth farm be "x":
Then the acres in the McBride farm is "4.5x":

Equation:
x + 4.5x = 550
5.5x = 550
x = 100 acres (# of acres in the Smyth farm)
4.5x = 450 acres (# of acres in the McBride farm)
