A fish tank contained 23 fish which were either guppies or swordtails. The number of guppies was 1 less than 3 times the number of swordtails. How many of each kind of fish were there?
let number of sword tails =x
3 times this=3x
1 less than above=3x-1=number of guppies
total of sword tails and guppies=x+3x-1=4x-1
but total is 23
so 4x-1=23
4x=23+1=24
x=24/4=6
so there are x=6 sword tails and 3x-1=3*6-1=18-1=17 guppies
