The combined rainfall in August and December is 9.8 inches, find the rainfall for each month.

In August the average number of inches of rain in New York is one inch more than three times the average rainfall in December.

Let the average in December be "x" inches.
Then August average number is 3x + 1
--------------------------------------------------------------
The combined rainfall in August and December is 9.8 inches,
find the rainfall for each.
EQUATION:
x + 3x+1 = 9.8 inches
4x = 8.8 inches
x = 2.2 inches (amount in December)
3x+1 = 7.6 inches (amount in August)
