In an attempt to conceal his true age, an actor states his birth year as follows. He claims that if 237 is subtracted from his birth year divided by 3, and if this number is now divided by 5, then the result is 83. In what year was the actor born? Here is what I have so far X-237/3 divided by 5 = 83

Answer by nerdybill(7384) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.
Let x = Year he was born
.
Then from:"if 237 is subtracted from his birth year divided by 3, and if this number is now divided by 5, then the result is 83" we get our equation:
(x/3 - 237)/5 = 83
multiplying both sides by 5 we get:
(x/3 - 237) = 415
adding 237 to both sides:
x/3 = 652
finally multiplying both sides by 3:
x = 1956
