You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A sponsor for the school yearbook has asked that the length and width of a photo in their ad be increased by the same amount in order to double the area of the photo.
If the photo was originally 12cm by 8cm, what should the new dimensions of the enlarged photo be?
----------
Original Area = 12*8 = 96 sq. cm
----------
New Area = (12+x)(8+x) = 2*96
96 + 20x + x^2 = 192
x^2 + 20x - 96 = 0
(x-4)(x+24) = 0
Positive solution:
x = 4 cm
New Dimensions: 12+4 = 16 cm ; 8+4 = 12 cm

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Area = LW
Original Area = 12*8 = 96
requirement: double the area by increasing the lenght and width by the same amount
New Area = 2*96 = 192
New Length = L + x = 12+x
New Width = W + x = 8 + x
192 = (12+x)(8+x)
192 = 96 + 20x + x^2
0 = x^2 + 20x -96
0 = (x + 24)(x - 4)
x = 4
Does 16* 12 = 192?
