Six more than twice a number is four times the difference between three and the number. What is the number?

Six more than twice a number is four times the difference between three and the number. What is the number?
More than means add, is means =, times means multiply, difference means subtract.
So with that in mind lets try and solve the problem.
Let x be the number;
6+2x=4(x-3)
First distribute the 4;
6+2x=4x-12
Now get like terms together;subtract 6 from both sides and subtract 4x from both sides;
6+2x-6-4x=4x-12-4x-6
2x-4x=-12-6
add like terms;
-2x=-18
divide both sides by -2

x=9
