Question 142644: The sum of two numbers is 72. One of the numbers is six more than twice the other. What are the two numbers?
Answer by checkley77(12844) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x+y=72 or x=72-y
x=2y+6
now we set these equations equal to each other:
72-y=2y+6
-y-2y=6-72
-3y=-66
y=-66/-3
y=22 for one number.
x=72-22
x=50 for the other number.
proof:
50=2*22+6
50=44+6
50=50
