Question 117505: A farmer drives to town at 40km/h, spends 1.5 hours in town and returns home travelling at 30km/h. If he has been away from home a total of 5 hours, how far is hes farm from town?
Answer by checkley71(8403) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
he only spent (5-1.5=3.5) hours driving.
therefore we have the following equation.
40t=30(3.5-t)
40t=122.5-30t
40t+30t=105
70t=105
t=105/70
t=1.5 hours or 1 hour 30 minutes for the trip to town.
3.5-1.5=2 hours for the return trip.
distance to town is:
40*1.5=60 miles.
30*2=60 miles.
