The length of a rectangular piece of sheet steel is 2 in longer than the width. Find the exact dimensions if the area of the sheet is 168 sq. in.
---------------
Let width be x inches ; length is x+2 inches.
Area = x(x+2) = 168 sq in
x^2+2x-168 = 0
(x-12)(x-14) = 0
x = 12 or x = 14
If width = 12, length = 14 inches
If width = 14 in, length = 12 inches.
