Question 1164872: Jackie went to a candle store and bought 8 candles and a discount card for $10. Later that day, she went back and bought 10 more candles. She got a $2 discount for using her new discount card. If she spent a total of $98 at the candle store that day, how much did each candle cost, assuming that they each cost the same amount?
Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
she went to the candle store and bought 8 candles and a discount card for 10 dollars.
i interpret this to mean she paid 10 dollars for the discount card.
she went back to the store and bought another 10 candles.
she got a discount of 2 dollars for using the discount card.
the total she spent that day was 98 dollars.
take away the 10 dollars that she spent for the discount card and she spent 88 dollars for the candles.
add the 2 dollars discount to that total and she spent 90 dollars for the candles without the discount.
the price of the candles without any discount was 90 / 18 = 5 dollars each.
without any discount, she would have payed 18 * 5 = 90 dollars for the candles.
she paid an extra 10 dollars for the discount card making her total 100 dollars.
she got a 2 dollar discount making her total 98 dollars spent at the store.
with this interpretation, the solution makes sense.
the solution is that the candles cost 5 dollars apiece without any discount.
