If the smallest number is  p,  then the greatest is   q = p+5.   Therefore,


    the value of the average of p and q in terms of p is   =  = p + 2.5.     ANSWER



CHECK.  Let p = 1;  then q = 6  and the average of the two numbers is   =  = 3.5 = 1 + 2.5.    ! Correct !
