Question 991541: How do you solve
x+3y=18
-2x + 5y= -3
So far I did 3y=-x+18
And started to divide each by 3...
3y/3 = -x/3 + 18/3
Y= -1/3x + 6
Y-6= -1/3x
Do I divide both sides by -1/3?
Now I'm stuck... Can you please help me?

.

Express  x  from the first equation,  x = 18-3y,  and substitute it into the second equation.  You will get

-2*(18-3y) + 5y = -3.

Simplify and solve it:

-36 + 6y + 5y = -3,

11y = -3 + 36,

11y = 33,

y = = 3.

Then   x = 18 -3y = 18 - 3*3 = 18 - 9 = 9.

Answer.  x=9,  y=3.
