5x - 3y = 1
2x + y = 8

5x - 3y = 1
6x + 3y = 24 {multiplied bottom equation by 3}

11x = 25 {added the two equations}
x = 25/11 {divided each side by 11}

2x + y = 8 {bottom original equation}
2(25/11) + y = 8 {substituted 25/11, in for x, into bottom original equation}
50/11 + y = 8 {multiplied}
y = 8 - 50/11 {subtracted 50/11 from each side}
y = 88/11 - 50/11 {got common denominator}
y = 38/11 {subtracted}

x = 25/11 or 2 3/11
y = 38/11 or 3 5/11

(25/11, 38/11) is the point of intersection of the two lines as shown below
