GIVEN A SET OF POINTS. EX. (2,-3) & (-8,5) YOU CAN FIND THE SLOPE(m) THUS:
(Y2-Y1)/(X2-X1)
(5+3)/(-8-2)
8/-10=-4/5 OR -.8
NOW WE NEED TO CALCULATE THE Y INTERCEPT BYU SUBSTITUTING ONE SET OF (X,Y) VALUES INTO THE LINE EQUATION Y=mX+b) THUS:
-3=-.8*2+b
-3=-1.6+b
b=-3+1.6
b=-1.4 THIS IS THE Y INTERCEPT. (0,-1.4)
NOW SET Y=0 AND SOLVE FOR X THUS:
0=-.8X-1.4
-.8X=1.4
X=1.4/-.8
X=-1.75 FOR THE X INTERCEOT (-1.75,0)
