Question 877410: I'm in year 9, doing graphing and finding gradient, etc. This question refers to finding gradient, although its kinda just algebra.
The question is: Find the missing number if the gradient joining points (0,2) and (1,x) is 4.
This is what I have tried:
2=(5-9)/(x-1)
2=-4/(x-1)
3=-4/x
3x=-4
x=3/4

However, the answer in the book is -1.
I think that I have made a mistake regarding algebra or writing out the correct formula.
I would love if you could tell me where I have gone wrong, and any implications for this type of math in the future. I have got other similar questions correct, and am thinking that I have probably made a silly mistake.

The steps shown do not match the given data to any extent. Start with the correct values in the slope formula (and you mentioned "gradient" which is probably something else):

REMARK:
You wanted help and then found or claimed it to be useless; but on the contrary, the help is plainly on target. Your question as posted differs from the steps you showed. You did not properly follow the slope formula, while I in fact used it for you directly.
