Question 851008: Sketch the parabola by using its intercepts.
Please show all steps (and if you can explain where some of the numbers and stuff you get come from.)

Sketch the parabola y = x^2 + x - 6 by using its intercepts.
y intercept occurs when x = 0
y = 0^2 + 0 - 6
y = -6 is the y intercept
:
x intercepts occur when y = 0
x^2 + x - 6 = 0
Factors to
(x+3)(x-2) = 0
x = -3
x = +2
These are the x intercepts
:
You need a couple more coordinates to construct a graph
find y when x = -2 and x = +1
y = -2^2 - 2 - 6
7 = 4 - 1 - 6
y = -4
:
and x=+1
y = 1^2 + 1 - 6
y = -4
:
Plot the intercepts 0,-6; -3,0; 2,0; and points -2,-4; 1,-4
should look like this
