Question 84964: I have a question that states: sketch the graph of f(x)=[[x]]-2. How do I do this?
Answer by rapaljer(4671) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Is this the "bracket function"??? If so, then it means that whatever value is within the brackets, you round it DOWN to the nearest integer below that value. For example:
if x= 0, then [[x]] =0
if x=.5, then [[x]] = 0
if x=.9, then [[x]]=0
if x= 1, then [[x]]=1
if x=1.5, then [[x]]=1.
etc.
This is also called the "unit step function." In this case, for x from 0 to 1, the value of y is -2. For x from 1 to 2, the value is -1, etc. There will be an closed (solid) endpoint on the left side of each "step", and an open endpoint on the right side of each "step."
