Question 800838: A boat travesl 9 miles upstream in 3 hours. Going downstream it can travel 33 miles in the same amount of time. Find the speed of the current and the boat in still water.
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
boat speed =x mph
current speed =y mph
against current 3 hours
with current 3 hours

Distance against 9 miles distance with 33 miles
t=d/r against current -
9/( x-y )=3
x-y=3...............................(1)

33.00 /(x+y )=3
x+y=11...............................(2)
Add (1) & (2)
2x=14
x=7
y=4
