Solve the system by addition.
x + 4y = 2 ---- eqn(1)
3x – 2y = –22 ----- eqn (2)
Multiply the second equation by 2, to make the y coefficient as -4
6x - 4y = -44 ----- call this eqn (3)
Now, adding eqn(1) to eqn(3)
x + 6x + 4y - 4y = 2 - 44
7x = -42
x = -42/7 = -6
Substituting for x in eqn(1)
-6 + 4y = 2
4y = 8, or y = 8/4 = 2
Solution: x = -6, y = 2
