An oblique or slant asymptotes exists in rational functions when the degree of the numerator is one degree higher than that of the denominator.
To find the equation of this asymptote which is a straight line, divide the numerator by the denominator by long division. You will get a quotient+remainder. Ignoring the remainder, the quotient is the straight line equation of the oblique asymptote.
