Question 705124: Recently in Algebra 1, we have started graphing and shading linear inequalities. Our teacher did not explain thoroughly how to solve them. One I am unable to solve is at all is,
Y is greater than or less than X
It confused me, please help me try to solve this!
Answer by josgarithmetic(39617) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
An attempt to explain:
"Y is greater than or less than X ",
That symbolically says, OR .
Consider the line in two dimensions, Y=X. You can easily visualize and graph this. It's a line through the origin with slope 1. That is for the EQUATION.
You are now considering the INEQUALITY in which the actual line is EXCLUDED. You should draw a dotted line instead of a solid line, and shade the regions above and below the dotted line. You have above the dotted line, and you have shaded below the dotted line.
