Question 70156: Can you please explain how to graph the inequality...instructions...graph the inequality...it is suppose to be a line under the less and/or greater than sign to make it inequality.
3x + y < 5
Answer by stanbon(75887) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3x + y < = 5
-----------
Graph the EQUALITY first.
y=-3x-5
Let x=0, then y=-5 giving you point (0,-5)
Let x=1, then y=-8 giving you point (1,-8)
Plot those points and draw a line thru them.
That is the "boundary" of the INEQUALITY.
Now, pick any point on either side of the line; say (0,0)
Subtitute those x, y values into the INEQUALITY to
see if they give you a true statement, as follows:
3*0+0 < 5
0<5
That is true.
It means that ALL points on the same side of the line as
(0,0) will satisfy the INEQULITY.
That side is called a "half-plane". That half-plane is the
graph of the INEQUALITY
The graph of your original problem includes the line and
the half-plane.

Stan H.
