Question 700926: Hi, I'm new here and hope this is the right topic for my question(s)...
I have some problems with my math project. I have problems with c. d. and e. i'll add a. and b. too though so you know what i've done here already :
1. Pick two animals to be in a race and answer the following questions.
a.) Suppose two animals are in a race. Choose the two animals and calculate the speed of each animal in yards per second.
I chose a fox with 20.53 yards per second and a coyote with 21.02 yards per second.
b. Decide how much of a head start (in yards) the faster animal offers the slower animal. For each animal, write an equation relating distance from the starting line to time.

I also got this.
The fox gets 10yd head start.
fox: x = 20.53y + 10 (because of the 10yd head start he got)
coyote: x = 21.02y

now here comes where I don't know what to/ how to do it.
c. Graph the two equations on the same coordinate plane. ( Now this is my problem)
I don't know how to graph and where they would go/etc.

d. How long will it take the faster animal to overtake the slower animal? How
many yards from the starting line are the animals when the faster animal
overtakes the slower animal?

now e. is the last part i added a screenshot for it : http://i49.tinypic.com/350rk.jpg

Now there's also a second part of this, but I don't want to ask too much of you.
I hope that you can help me and that I did not confuse you with my writing, I'm not native english. I would really appreciate it if you could help me out here and also explain so I can understand how you got to the answer and so i'll know what to do next time when i will have a problem like this.

Answer by ankor@dixie-net.com(22740)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
I would do it this way:
let x = travel time of the two animals
then write a distance equation for each
Fox
d = 20.53x+10
Coyote
d = 21.02x
:
Plot these two equations, vert is distance in yds

As you can see, because the speeds of the animals are so close it is hard to get a definitive graph, the lines are almost parallel
:
If you can, choose an animal with large speed difference say a coyote and rabbit
The speed of rabbit is about 17.1 yds/sec, give it a 20 yd head start, then you would have an equation of 17.1x + 20

Coyote catches the rabbit in about 5 sec a little over 100 yds
