Let Jill have x nickels and y dimes.
Then x + y = 50 ------------------------(1)
value of x nickels = 5x
value of y dimes = 10y
==> 5x + 10y = 350
Dividing throughout by 5 we have,
==> x + 2y = 70 -----------------------(2)
Subtracting eqns (2) and (1) we get,
y = 20
Plugging in y = 20 in (1) we arrive that x = 30
Thus Jill had 30 nickels and 20 dimes.
