If s varies inversely as x and s=4 when x=-4 then find s when x=2.

Understanding the terminology, inverse variation and direct variation is useful. When two variables vary directly (not this case), when one gets larger, the other gets larger. Conversely, when two variables vary inversely, when one gets smaller the other gets larger. That is the case here between s and x.
...
Given the relationship between s and x described in the problem:
...
When x = -4, s = 4... could be written:
s = -x
...
So, when x = 2, then s = -2
...
If you wanted to plot this relationship on a graph, it would be a straight line, sloping downward to the right at a 45 deg angle, passing through, 0, 0.

Does this help?
