x is the independent variable and y is the dependent variable.
the value of y depends on the value of x.
for every value of x, you use the equation to find the corresponding value of y.
here's the graph of y = (-1/3)x + 4

to graph 9x - 4y = 36, you need to solve for y
subtract 9x from both sides of the equation to get:
-4y = -9x + 36
divide both sides of the equation by -4 to get:
