Question 403046: i have a ti-82 and i need to know how to use it to graph equations
Answer by MathLover1(20850) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
How to Graph on a Model TI-82
Instructions
1.
Press the "Y=" button.
2.
Type the equation into the graphing calculator using the keypad. For example, if you want to graph x^2, then press "x" and then "^" and then "2."
3.
Press "Graph." The graph will appear on screen.
Finding Zeros, Roots, Solutions, x-intercepts
Zeros or roots of functions and solutions to equations can either be real or complex numbers. x-intercepts can only be real numbers.
The TI graphing calculator can be used to find the real roots of an equation.
TI-82
1. Press Calc (2nd Trace)
2. Choose Root (#2)
3. For the Lower Bound, arrow to the left of the x-intercept and press enter.
4. For the Upper Bound, arrow to the right of the x-intercept and press enter.
5. For the Guess, arrow to the x-intercept and press enter.
6. The TI-82 will return a value for x and 0 (or really close to it) for y.
Finding Minimums and Maximums
1. Press Calc (2nd Trace)
2. Choose Minimum (#3) or Maximum (#4)
3. For the Lower Bound, arrow to the left of the extremum and press enter.
4. For the Upper Bound, arrow to the right of the extremum and press enter.
5. For the Guess, arrow to the extremum and press enter.
6. The TI-82 will return a value for x and y. The x is where the extremum occurs and the y is the minimum or maximum value.
Finding Intersections
When selecting the two curves to use, the TI-82 defaults to y1 and y2, so if those are the curves you're using, you just hit enter when it asks for the first and second curves. If your curves are not in y1 or y2, then you can use the up or down arrow keys to select the different curves. The TI-82 will show you a 1 or 2 for the function number in the upper left hand corner of the screen.
1. Press Calc (2nd Trace)
2. Choose Intersect (#5)
3. For the First Curve, hit enter.
4. For the Second Curve, hit enter
5. For the Guess, arrow to the intersection and press enter.
6. The TI-82 will return a value for x and y. Both of these coordinates are part of the solution.
Tips
If your graph doesn't show, check that your window has an appropriate setting. For example, if you wanted to show x^2 in your graphing window, a setting of x=0 to x=10 would likely show you a reasonable amount of your graph. However, setting the window to x=25 to x=50 would not show the graph at all. To change the setting, press the "Window" key and use the arrow keys and then the keypad to change the settings.
