Question 388869: I am not really sure how to go about answering this question as there is no given objective function to work out the maximum and minimum values of the given constraints. So my question is, "Is it possible to find the maximum and minimum values (if any) of the given linear expressions subject to their given constraints?" If there is could you help me please? Thank you and have a happy new year.
x is greater than -2 but less than 5
y is greater than 3 but less than 8
6x-7y>-42
5x+2y is less than or equal to 40
3x-y+8

I am not really sure how to go about answering this question as there is no given objective function to work out the maximum and minimum values of the given constraints. x is greater than -2 but less than 5
Draw verical lines at x = -2 and at x = 5
---------------------------------------------
y is greater than 3 but less than 8
Draw horizontal lines at y = 3 and at y = 8
----
6x-7y>-42
Graph the line y = (6/7)x+6
-----
5x+2y is less than or equal to 40
Graph the line y= -(5/2)x + 20
------
The following is probably your "objective function"
It is the expression you are trying to minimize or maximize.
3x-y+8
----------------------------------------------
Your job is to find all of the "corners" of the
enclosed polygon. You then evaluate the objective
expression using the x/y values of each corner
to see which pair gives you the max or min you
are asked to find.
