What do you mean by "solve" it?

If you mean find the particular numbers for x and y so that the equation is true, you can't do it. There are an infinite number of such pairs of numbers.

You can solve it for one of the variables in terms of the other -- for example, add -2y to both sides and the equation will be solved for x in terms of y.

You can graph it. Select a value for x, calculate y, plot the resulting point and repeat for a different value of x. Then draw a line through the two points.

If you have another equation such that you have a system of two equations in two variables you can, in some cases, find a unique solution.

You need to be more specific about what you mean.
