Question 326509: Write an inequality or an equation and use it to solve the problem.
During the first four months of the year, Jack earned $710, $990, $670 and $730. If Jack must have an average salary of at least $720 in order to earn retirement benefits, what must Jack earn in the fifth month in order to qualify for benefits?

If he needs an average of 720 per month for 5 months, then the sum of the 5 months salaries must be 720 times 5 = 3600. Add up the amounts he earned in the first 4 months and subtract that sum from 3600. The difference will be the amount he needs to earn in the fifth month.
