On your Cartesian coordinate graph paper, start at the origin (that's where the x-axis, the horizontal one, crosses the y-axis, that's the vertical one). Measure 3 units (squares) to the right of the origin and then 5 units (squares) down and mark your point. Notice that when you designate a point in the cartesian coordinate system, you are given two numbers.
The first number is always the x-value and second number is always the y-value or (x, y). This is also known as an "ordered pair".
If the given x-value is positive, then you will measure to the right of the origin. If the x-value is negative, then you will measure to the left of the origin. Similarly for the y-value, if it positive, you'll measure up from the x-axis and if it is negstive, you'll measure down from the x-axis
The coordinates (address) of your point, given as (3, -5) is like locating a point on a street map that has numbers across the bottom of the page and letters down one side of the page. When you are given the coordinates of a street, you can easily locate it on the right map page by finding the intersection of the two lines designated by the letter and number.
