no you didn't... it never ceases to amaze me that students find functions so tricky...they are so so so easy and straight forward. You did too much work!

g(x) = -2x-5 means take the value in the bracket --> here the x, and then do what you are told, namely multiply it by -2 anf then take off 5.

so, g(3a) is the same, just that instead of "x", we now have "3a"

g(3a) = -2(3a) -5
g(3a) = -6a -5

At this point, students usually say, "is that it? That is so simple. Are you sure it isn't more complicated?" and the answer is no, it isn't more complicated.
