How do you find the slope and y-intercept of the line 6x-2y=8
:
Perform the necessary operations to put the equation into the slope/intercept form
thats y = mx - b; where m = slope and b = the intercept
:
6x - 2y = 8
Subtract 6x from both sides
-2y = -6x + 8
y has to be positive, multiply both sides -1 change the signs
2y = 6x - 8
Divide by 2 to give y a coefficient of 1:
y = x -
which is
y = 3x - 4
slope = 3; y intercept = -4
:
Check this in the original equation, we know the y intercept occurs when x=0
6x - 2y = 8
6(0) - 2y = 8
-2y = 8
divide both sides by -2, and we get
y = -4 which is what we got
