Any time you want to compare two variables in which there is a relationship between the variables, it is helpful to draw a graph. I guess the French mathematician Rene DeCartes is credited with developing this method. When we draw x and y axes, this is called a Cartesian coordinate systm, named after DeCartes.

As I said, graphing is useful anytime you want to compare two variables. We do it all the time in Statistics (analysis of data), business (illustrating revenue or profit per unit produced or sold), and of course, higher math.
