Question 212735: Hi there. I need to see if I am on the right track. I need to graph the following y = -2 abs(x+1)-4. I need to construc a sequence of five graphs to get from one to another.
I am setting up my 5 graphs as follows: (1) y = abs(x) (2) y = abs(x+1)
(3) y = -2 abs (x+1) (4) y = 2 abs (x+1) and (5) y = -2 abs (x+1)-4.
Am I on the right track with the above equations?
Thanks - Lori

To graph , simply follow the given steps below:

Step 1) Graph

Graph of

Note: the graph of is simply comprised of the lines and (just don't graph the portion that lies below the x-axis).

Step 2) Shift 1 unit to the left to get

Graph of (red) and (green)

Step 3) Vertically stretch by a factor of 2 to get

Graph of (red) and (green)

Step 4) Reflect over the x axis to get

Graph of (red) and (green)

Step 5) Shift the entire graph of down 4 units to get

Graph of (red) and (green)

So the graph of is

Graph of
