Barry would be b. Clyde would be 8+b. The equation would be (8+b)+b=40. Then you combine like terms which would give you 8+2b=40. Then subtract 8 from both sides so you get 2b=32. Then you divide each side by 2 so you get b=16. Barry worked 16 hours and Clyde worked 24 hours.
