Question 176566: how can you tell from the equations how many solutions the linear system has?
x-y=2 equation 1
4x-4y=8 equation 2
how to solve
Answer by Mathtut(3670) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
if its the same line it has infinite solutions. If it has lines that intersect, which is the majority, it has one solution. If lines are parallel there is no solution
:
put the equations in slope intercept form and compare the slopes.
:
y=x-2
4y=4x-8--->divide terms by 4--->y=x-2
:
meaning this is the same exact line...so it has infinite solutions.
:
remember if the slope is the same and its not the same line then NO solutions. all the rest intersect in one point,hence one solution. The slope is the key
