Question 160747: graph a line with the slope -3 passing through the point(-2,-5)
Answer by KnightOwlTutor(293)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
We know the general equation of a line is y=mx+B
we know m=-3
so our line has the general equation of y=-3x+b
we can solve for b by plugging in the x,y values into the equation
-5=(-3)(-2)+b
-5=6+b
subtract 6 from both sides
-11=b

Solved by pluggable solver: DESCRIBE a linear EQUATION: slope, intercepts, etc
Equation describes a sloping line. For any
equation ax+by+c = 0, slope is .
  • X intercept is found by setting y to 0: ax+by=c becomes ax=c. that means that x = c/a. -11/3 = -3.66666666666667.
  • Y intercept is found by setting x to 0: the equation becomes by=c, and therefore y = c/b. Y intercept is -11/1 = -11.
  • Slope is -3/1 = -3.
  • Equation in slope-intercept form: y=-3*x+-11.
