An even function is a function where the same pattern is reflected on the y-axis. That means that for negative and positive x values, the y follows the same pattern. To figure out if they are even or not, plug in 1 for x, and see what you get. Then plug in -1 for x, and see what you get. If is true (if you end up with the same answer for both), then they are even. If you don't, then they are not even.
