Theater tickets are $8 for general admission (GA) and $5 for students (STD).
During one evening 240 tickets were sold, and the receipts were $1680.
How many of each type of ticket was sold?
:
Let x = no. of GA tickets
Let y = no. of STD tickets
:
Translate these two statements to equations:
:
During one evening 240 tickets were sold,"
x + y = 240
or
y = (240 - x); we can use this for substituting below
:
"tickets are $8 for general admission (GA) and $5 for students (STD)....
the receipts were $1680."
8x + 5y = 1680
:
How many of each type of ticket was sold?
;
Substitute (240-x) for y in the above equation, find x:
8x + 5(240-x) = 1680
:
8x + 1200 - 5x = 1680; multiplied what's inside the brackets
:
8x - 5x = 1680 - 1200
:
3x = 480
x =
x = 160 Ga tickets
:
Find y:
y = 240 - x
y = 240 - 160
y = 80 STD tickets
:
:
Check solution in the receipt$ equation
8(160) + 5(80) =
1280 + 400 = 1680
:
Did I make this understandable? Think you can do these type of equations now?
