Simplifying an expression simply means grouping the like terms together (in this example, group all of the "x" terms together and then all of the "y" terms)
1. (2x + y) + (-x - 3y)
2. Rewrite the expression:
2x + y - x - 3y
3. Group the x terms:
2x - x + y - 3y
x + y - 3y
4. Group the y terms:
x - 2y
The expression in 4. is in simplified form since there is nothing left to combine.
