I am to graph the equation and identify the y intercept.
y + x = -3

I am to graph the equation and identify the y intercept.
y + x = -3
:
Put the equation in the general y= form
y = -x - 3; subtracted x from both sides:
:
Make a table of x/y coordinates, we do this like this
Choose values for x above and below 0 and find y
:
For x = -3; substitute - 3 for x in the equation and find y:
y = -(-3) -3
y = +3 - 3; remember minus a minus is a plus
y = 0
:
Our table
x | y
--------
-3 | 0; means "when x=-3 then y=0
:
Do the same with x = -2
y = -(-2) - 3
y = +2 - 3
y = -1
:
Add that to the table
x | y
-------
-3 | 0
-2 |-1
:
Do the same for x values of -1, 0, +1, +2, +3
The completed table:
x | y
-------
-3 | 0
-2 |-1
-1 |-2
0 |-3
+1 |-4
+2 |-5
+3 |-6
:
Plot these on a standard +/-10, x/y graph; it should look like this

:
The y intercept occurs where it crosses the y (vertical) axis and always occurs
when x = 0, which is y = -3 on this equation
Note that the y = -3 at the intercept always occurs when x = 0
:
You probably realize that a linear equation we have a straight line and could
plot this with only 2 points in the table.
