Graph the following equations; calculate the slope,
x-intercept, and y-intercept, and label the intercepts
on the graph:
We write that in standard form
where m is the slope and (0,b) is the y-intercept:
So first to get the y we multiply both sides by
Now that is not in the form
but we can easily make it in that form by adding
to the right side in front of the :
Now we compare this to
and find and , so the slope is 0
and the y-intercept is (0,).
To plot the y-intercept, we first convert
to the mixed fraction and plot a
point on the y-axis, ths of the way between
1 and 2 on the y-axis:
Now since the slope is 0, that makes it easy. Lines
with slope 0 are always horizontal. Therefore we
draw a horizontal line through that point:
So the slope is 0, the y-intercept is (0,), and
there can be no x-intercept because the line is horizontal
and therefore parallel to the x-axis and therefore can
never intersect it.
