Question 120502: How do I determine which two equations represent perpendicular lines? (a) y = 4/7x - 3 (b) y = 3x -4/7 (c) y = -1/3x + 4/7 (d) y = 1/3x - 4/7?
Answer by tutor_paul(519)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Perpendicular lines have slopes which are negative reciprocals of each other. Since all of the choices given are already in y=mx+b form, you can easily read off the slope of each line. It is simply the coefficient of the x term. For example in choice a), the slope is 4/7.
-----------------------------
So, all you have to do is find the pair of lines whose slopes are negative reciprocals of each other and you are done. It is clear that b) and c) are the answers.
