Question 114682: Hello,
My daughter is in the 5th grade and she is having a hard time with this question. I cannot remember how to do problems using graphs. I really do appreciate your help. Here is the question:
A Meteorologist discovered that a storm is following a path determined by the equation y=x+5. Will the storm pass over the point (1,4) on the graph? Explain.
This problem is on a handout sheet, and she left school early today so she did not bring home her book.
Once again I really do appreciate your help.
Thank you,
Jennie

Simply plug in the values for x and y and see if the statement is true. If x=1 and y=4 the equation becomes 4 =? 1+5. As you can see, 4 does not equal 6, so no, (1,4) is not on the line.

================
Make a substitution in the equation.
Let x = 1; Let y = 4
See if you get a true statement.
-----------------------
4 = 1 + 5
4 = 6
That is not true.
-------------------
If the storm is as thin as a line the storm will not pass thru (1,4)
