Question 1057222: I have tried going through the TI-84 plus manual that came with my calculator, so that I can graph this linear equation: 3x+4y=-16. I have not been able to graph linear equations. Can someone please tell me how to enter this equation properly into my calculator? I have solved the problem manually.
Thank you

solve it for y and graph. When you want to make a circle (x^2+y^2=9, for example), you have to solve for y^2, and then take a square root and plot each separate root in Y1 and Y2.
4y=-3x-16
y=(-3/4)x-4

Answer by addingup(3677)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y = mx+b, where x and y are the coordinates (y goes up and down, x horizontally)
3x+4y = -16
4y = -3x-16
y = -3x/4-4
Choose 0 to substitute for x:
y = -3(0)/4-4
y = 0/4-4
y = 0-4
y = -4 We now have one set of points: (0, -4)
Now choose 1 to substitute for x:
y = (3(1)/4)-4
y = 3/4-4
y = 3/4+-(4/1*4/4) - multiply to get a common denominator 4
y = 3/4-16/4
y = (3-16)/4
y = -13/4 now we have another set of points: (1,-13/4)
Try substituting 2 for x and you'll get a third set of points: (2,-5/2)
Now you have three ordered pairs you can graph:
(0, -4), (1, -13/4), (2, -5/2)
This is what you get:

3x + 4y = - 16
4y = - 3x - 16
------- Solving for y

Press: "y =", located at the UPPER left side of the calculator
To the right of , enter:
Press: Graph
If the graph doesn't appear, you may have to go into "WINDOW" and tinker with the coordinates' min, max, and scale values.
Note that the graph should have a NEGATIVE slope, UNLIKE the INACCURATE graph one person came up with.
