angle 1 and angle 2 are a linear pair.
prove angle 1 = 180 degrees - angle 2
I need to be able to explain it to him as opposed to just give him the answer.

Definition of linear Pair of angles: Two angles that are adjacent (share a leg) and supplementary (add up to 180°) .
Because angle 1 + angle 2 = 180 degrees, angle 1 = 180 degrees - angle 2.
