So that you know *why* a claim or a theorem is true. Very important in higher-level math, particularly math research. Doing proofs helps you with logical thinking skills.
The one thing that I hate when it comes to teaching proofs in geometry is the fact that they are only taught in geometry. Proofs are used in virtually every field of mathematics, from algebra to number theory to graph theory to real analysis.
