I would say that you missed a primary lesson in the beginning if you are at a total loss.
Geometric figures have certain properties.
We can learn more about them by knowing other facts about them
For example we know that a square has four equal sides.
and four equal angles of 90 degrees.
We also know that opposite sides are parallel and adjacent sides are perpendicular.
Some of this we know from the definition of a square some we know from deduction and properties of rectangles and parallelograms. A square is a special type of rectangle and rectangles are a special kind of parallelogram.
